IN URGENT NEED OF HELP?

For those in urgent need of help who don't believe they can fit in one of John's presentation skills training or public speaking courses that start from as little as £75 delegare here are a few tips to get you started:

Invited to speak in public? It can be flattering and exciting to have someone call and ask you to speak at a business meeting or conference.   To get such a call suggests you are considered to be an expert in your particular field.   If this were not the case you would not have received the call!

However, being both a recognised expert and putting over your point in public speaking to an audience in a constructive, educational and entertaining manner requires careful planning and a high degree of presentation skills.

Ideally, if you have never been taught presentation skills, you ought to invest one day of your time to attend a public speaking training course. Presentation skills training can be one of the best investments you make in your business and private life.

In public speaking there is a saying 'Failing to plan is planning to fail'. When more time is available enroll on one of John Bell's public speaking training courses but for now your research and planning begins when you get that phone call asking you to give a presentation. There are important initial questions you must ask the person who has contacted you if you are to stand any chance of success as a public speaker.

Firstly, the obvious - as a public speaker you need to know the date and venue of the meeting.   Asking this question at the beginning can save a lot of wasted speaker preparation time. Excitement at being offered the honour of giving a presentation that is representing a company at an important public speaking event can sometimes fog your usual clear thinking.

Take into consideration the venue were the presentation is to be given - if it is some distance away event organisers will prefer you to arrive the day before.   To do so removes the worry that you might be delayed en route to an airport or railway station.

So ask the organisers of the speaker event if they would prefer you to arrive the day before.   If they do, it may affect the fee you quote! Be in no doubt your ability to speak in public has value. Even if you decide to give your presentation for free your skills as a public speaker warrants the repayment of travel costs and other incidental, out of pocket expenses.

As a speaker, the next thing to establish is a title for your presentation. Most public speaker event organisers already have a rough idea for the theme or basis of your presentation.

Agreeing the title of the talk or speech with the organiser will allow you to focus your mind on other presentation skills requirements later.

To develop your skills as a presenter it is worth taking a little time here to clarify an important issue which, if not addressed at the outset, may later cause disappointment for the event audience, yourself as the public speaker, and the organiser: there is a distinction between the title of your talk, speech or presentation - sometimes referred to as topic - and the objectives of the event organiser.

For example, the title of your presentation may have been agreed as, let's say, 'The Use of Appliances in the Fight Against Asthma'.   The title of your presentation is a short overview of the topic.   However, your client's desire might be that by the end of your presentation, delegates attending the business meeting or conference will have an understanding of the benefits of their new product and the basic skills required to use the device.

For you, as the expert, perhaps speaking in public for the first time, this is an important clarification in the early stages of the development of your presentation.

After years of teaching, both advanced and basic presentation skills courses and training, I have come to realise that the simplest way to clarify the object of your presentation is to ask the event organiser immediately after the title has been agreed, a question along the lines of 'By the end of the presentation, what do you want delegates to be aware of?'   In other words, 'what is the aim/objective of the presentation?'

Your next move, in this fine display of presentation skills, is to establish who will make up the bulk of the audience: what level are they in their organisations?, what skills do they possess?, etc.

Whilst speaking in public, knowing their level of knowledge will also be useful tool in your presentation skills bag.

As a public speaker, knowledge of the audience at an early stage is an important factor which can determine whether your client's goals and objectives will be achieved by the end of your presentation.

By way of example an audience of consultants specialising in asthma will have different learning priorities to trainee doctors. Pitching your presentation at the correct level requires skill and training and is an important part of successful public speaking.

Develop your presentation skills - learning about your audience before you start, preparation is paramount if you are to succeed in public speaking.

As a quality public speaker, you need to know exactly who the audience are as a group. For example, if you are told it is a business meeting or conference for members of a profession, ask the organiser where the delegates stand in that organisation. This will impress and show your presentation skills are polished.

To show even greater presentation skills as a public speaker it is important to establish not only who they are, but also what they are.

If the audience to whom you are to present are doctors, what is their level of knowledge likely to be on the subject you have been asked to present on?

There is little point in giving a presentation to nurses for 45 minutes on a basic understanding of asthma if they are asthma specialists with a better understanding of the disease than some general practitioners!

As a public speaker of quality, go even further and ask your client to establish what the audience are likely to want to know. Experts on asthma may be keen to learn about a new delivery method for asthma medication.

Develop your presentation skills by requesting additional information such as what the client would like as a 'go away with' message and you are well on the way towards a successful speech that will show you as a great public speaker.
